If you are a couple weighing a home printer against a print shop, DIY wedding invitations cost $35.88 for paper and envelopes when you print 100 at home. A print shop charges $140 for the same 100, or $84 while a sale runs. An Etsy template sits in the middle: it adds $5.94 to $12.99 to the paper bill.
We pulled the prices for all three routes on 2026-09-30 and put them side by side. We did not make or print any invitations, so the numbers below have no ink cost and no time estimate. One section says exactly what the table leaves out.

Those totals leave out ink, postage and your time, which we did not measure, so the real gap is smaller than the $104 the paper prices suggest.

The print shop at the regular price costs almost four times the paper-only route. That is $140 against $35.88, a gap of about $104.

Route 1: Design and print them yourself ($35.88)
The paper is the whole bill. We found a pack of Great Papers ivory flat cards, 5.5 by 7.75 inches, with 100 invitations and 100 envelopes for $35.88. That works out to $0.36 an invitation. The pack says printer compatible, which is a label, not a promise about your printer.
For the design, Canva's free plan costs $0. Its Pro plan costs $144 a year for one person. We did not test whether the free plan covers an invitation suite, so open the template list before you pay for anything.
Check your printer before you buy cardstock. One r/Weddingsunder10k thread on DIY invitations says to look at your printer's maximum paper thickness first. The pack holds exactly 100 cards. Every misprint leaves you one short, so a small wedding list has more room for mistakes than a big one.
Route 2: Buy an Etsy template and print it yourself ($41.82 to $48.87)
An Etsy template is a design file you edit and print yourself. You still buy the paper, so the total is the template plus the $35.88 pack.
We checked three template listings. They cost $5.94, $11.99 and $12.99. Add the paper and 100 invitations cost $41.82 to $48.87. Two of the three listing titles name Templett, an online template editor. The ratings we quote are for each listing, not the whole shop.

$5.94 is the lowest template price we found, with 4.9 stars across 1,765 reviews. It is built around a photo, so it suits couples who want their own picture on the card.

At $12.99 with 4.9 stars from 1,587 reviews, this is the most expensive of the three and sells a full suite, so it fits couples who want every card matched. The listing title names Templett. Open the listing and check what the suite includes before you buy.
Route 3: Order printed invitations from a print shop ($140)
We checked one print shop, Vistaprint. Its page showed 100 wedding invitations at $1.40 each, $140 in total, and a sale price of $0.84 each, $84 in total. Envelopes and backside printing were included in both.
The sale banner said it ended Oct. 1. It may be over when you read this, so plan on $140 and treat the sale as a bonus. The page also said 50 invitations for under $50 while the sale ran.
We did not check other print shops. Staples, Walmart and Amazon showed no usable prices when we tried.
What the cost table leaves out

We did not price ink or toner, postage, invitations made by a custom designer, or your time. Add those before you decide.
- Ink: Home printing uses ink or toner on every card. We did not measure it. Look at your cartridge's page yield and divide.
- Postage: Every route pays the same postage, so it never changes which route is cheapest. Have one finished invitation weighed at the post office before you buy stamps.
- Time: We did not time anything. Printing at home also means cutting, folding and assembling by yourself.
- Custom design: A designer-made suite is a fourth route. We did not price it.
Which route fits which wedding
Count households, not guests. Invitations go to a household, so the number you need is usually lower than your guest count. Our small wedding ideas guide covers guest lists of 10 to 75.
Choose Route 1 if the lowest price matters most and you are comfortable with your printer. It is the cheapest of the three at $35.88 for 100.
Choose Route 2 if you want the design done. It adds between $5.94 and $12.99 and the paper and printing stay the same.
Choose Route 3 if you would rather not print at all. At the regular price the gap is about $91 to $104 against the two home routes. On sale it shrinks to about $35 to $48.
